Sub-Blogs

Appliance Notes is a blog where I file all the new and interesting kitchen appliances I see in the course of my work. I also include articles on choosing appliances here.
Kitschy Kitchens is a blog where I critique the worst of the worst in kitchens. Poor design, an assault on the eyes, wrong colors, wrong materials; they all can be found there. Take an amusing detour to discover what you DON'T want in a kitchen.

How to Hire a "Green" Contractor

Green Building Advisor is offering a down-loadable free white paper, Thinning the Herd for homeowners who want to learn what to expect and ask of builders or remodelers promoting themselves as experienced "green" practitioners.

In fact, the article also delineates most of the criteria you need to consider about hiring a contractor even if you aren't building or remodeling green.

It's well worth the read.

We designers would be lost without great contractors to execute our best laid plans. That's where the rubber meets the road. The best design in the world is only a pile of paper without good execution.

  2. I think the best way to start is with an energy audit of their homes Manahattan.

We did an energy audit on our own home using a great company recommended by our energy provider (Pacific Gas & Electric). PG&E recommended Recurve, an energy auditing and mitigation specialist based in San Francisco and now going national (www.recurve.com).

With our energy audit in hand we have a blueprint for future renovations to increase the energy efficiency of our home. It's a few hundred dollars very well spent.
